During her 5 years in Key West, Gayla Morgan is delighted and grateful to have worked with the Waterfront Playhouse as both an actor and a writer.
In addition to the distinct joy of portraying Florence Foster Jenkins in WF’s 2014 production of Souvenir (a “bucket list” role for her), onstage Gayla has fallen in love with a con man’s bodyguard as Muriel in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and has counseled not only bad spellers but also a truculent principal as Rona in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee. Other favorite Key West shows include Forbidden Broadway at the Red Barn and her own cabaret of original songs, Doing What I Love, Loving What I Do at the Tennessee Williams Cabaret Theater.
In 2014, the Waterfront premiered A Dog Story, with book written by local Eric Weinberger and music and lyrics written by Gayla, as its final show of the season. Also premiered in Key West, Conch Republic (The Musical!) (book by Monnie King, words and music by Gayla) has been presented annually by the Fringe Theater of Key West. Other shows include Reflections on Being Single (produced at DCPA’s Encores!, Denver, CO), and Mary — A Musical, about the life of Mary Magdalene, a 2010 finalist in the esteemed Eugene O’Neill NMTC considerations (Equity reading, York Theater, NYC).
