FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE OCTOBER 28, 2006
Waterfront Playhouse Opens Its 88th Season with the Florida Premiere of “Destroying David”.
KEY WEST, FL— The Waterfront Playhouse opens its 2026–27 season, its 88th, with the Florida premiere of “Destroying David,” a funny, moving, and ultimately uplifting solo play starring Jessica Miano Kruel and directed by Waterfront Playhouse Artistic Director Patrick New. The production runs November 12–14 as part of the theatre’s Spotlight Series.
Written by Jason Odell Williams, “Destroying David” takes audiences to Florence, Italy, where a seemingly impossible crisis becomes the backdrop for a deeply human story about art, grief, and the fragile beauty of life. As the tour guide confronts the possibility of losing one of the world’s greatest works of art, the play explores how creativity, resilience, and our connection to beauty can sustain us through life’s darkest moments.
Balancing humor with heartbreak, “Destroying David” is both a celebration of artistic genius and a reminder of the extraordinary power art holds in our lives. In an intimate solo performance, Jessica Miano Kruel brings this richly layered story to life, inviting audiences to consider what we stand to lose—and what art helps us hold on to.
“‘Destroying David’ is a wonderful way to open our 88th season,” says Artistic Director Patrick New. “It’s funny, moving, and ultimately uplifting, with a powerful message about the importance of art in our lives. At a time when we need art and the connections it creates more than ever, I’m delighted to bring this remarkable play to the Waterfront Playhouse.”
The production is part of the Waterfront Playhouse’s Spotlight Series, featuring intimate theatrical experiences that bring audiences close to the story and the artist.
Performances of “Destroying David” run November 12–14 at the Waterfront Playhouse in historic Mallory Square, Key West. For tickets and additional information, visit the Waterfront Playhouse website or contact the box office.

“Destroying David is a marvel! A true feat of imagination. A story of timeless art and everyday grief. A meditation on mortality, both human and artistic.” – On Stage, Texas
“Breathtaking! [Destroying David] shows us that in our darkest, most hopeless moments, art—theatre, sculpture, and the shared breath of a live audience—is exactly what ‘shows us the light.’ It is a shimmering example of why we need the theatre now more than ever.” – Stage & Cinema

"With the theatre located On The Edge of the water as well as most productions chosen and designed to be performed On The Edge of the stage, it seemed like a winning title", said Managing Artistic Director Tom Thayer. Although a few productions, such as the upcoming musical The Rocky Horror Show will have more production value, the majority of productions, such as Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, The Informer, Bash, and Trunk Material 2 are created and designed to be performed simply.
