Only a few performances remain of “Avenue Q” at the Waterfront Playhouse, which will end March 25th. This smash hit has seen sold-out houses, nightly standing ovations and rave reviews. The Key West Weekly said of the show, “With impeccable acting, direction, music and set design, Waterfront Theater has yet again brought Broadway to Key West…Smart, sassy and supremely clever.” KONK Life raved “Avenue Q” is “outrageously entertaining…a magical tour de force that is not to be missed.”

“Avenue Q” is a coming-of-age parable, addressing and satirizing the issues and anxieties associated with entering adulthood. Its characters lament that as children, they were assured by their parents, and by children’s television programs such as PBS’s “Sesame Street,” that they were ‘special snowflakes’ and ‘could do anything’; but as adults, they discover that in the real world their options are limited, and they are no more special than anyone else. The musical is notable for the use of puppets, animated by unconcealed puppeteers, alongside human actors.

The music and lyrics are by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (“The Book of Mormon”), and the book is by Jeff Whitty. The original, politically incorrect songs cover a range of hilarious topics, and the titles include: musical include “It Sucks To Be Me,” “Everyone’s A Little Bit Racist,” “The Internet Is For Porn,” “I Wish I Could Go Back To College” and more.

The production is directed by the Waterfront’s artistic director Danny Weathers, with choreography by Penny Leto and musical direction by Michael Fauss. The cast includes Brian Hall, Kristen Michelle, Jeremy Zoma, Lora Nicolas, Justin Ahearn, Juanita B. Green and Susannah Wells, as well as 23 puppets.

“Avenue Q” carries an Audience Advisory: Rated R for audiences 18 and up due to the adult language, themes and full frontal puppet nudity and sex.

Tickets are $50 and are available at www.waterfrontplayhouse.org or at 305-294-5015. The musical runs until March 25th and all shows are 8 PM. Memberships and gift certificates are available on our website. Also, check out our Friday Night Date Night deal, as well as other discounts on the website. The production is sponsored by Preferred Properties Realty, with season sponsors: Digital Island Media, Wodu Media and Royal Furniture.
