THE KEY WEST CONTEMPORARY DANCE COMPANY IN “1969” AT THE WATERFRONT!

The Waterfront Playhouse presents The Key West Contemporary Dance Company in “1969” – an evening of original dance pieces based on the music of that transformative year. There are only four performances: April 12, 13 & 14 at 8 pm, with a matinee on the 14th at 3 pm.

This special presentation is a vital part of the Waterfront’s mission of supporting and promoting local arts groups and artists. “1969” is part of the Waterfront’s subscription season and is sponsored by the public broadcast stations, WKWM, 91.5 and WLRN, 91.3. The post-performance opening night party on the 12th is generously sponsored by Jack Paul and catering by Help Yourself. The 2011/12 season is sponsored by Wodu Media, Digital Island Media and ATT: The Real Yellow Pages.

Artistic director and choreographer Kyla Piscopink has created a dynamic evening of dance that utilizes the music of the late 1960’s to reflect the seismic changes that were taking place in this country and around the world. The war in Vietnam, protests, the political divide, love-ins, peace, drugs, flower power, civil rights – all were part of the powerful forces of change that were taking place. In fact, Ms. Piscopink has created the concert in honor of her father who was a medic in the Vietnam War. As John Lennon put it, “The thing the sixties did was to show us the possibilities and the responsibility that we all had. It wasn’t the answer. It just gave us a glimpse of the possibility.”

The Key West Contemporary Dance Company was created in 2009, after first appearing as The Ganesha Dance Theater (playing at the Waterfront in 2008). Their mission is to provide local dancers with the opportunity to dance in a professional environment and to showcase the company on various local stages, both traditional and non-traditional.

“1969” will include the dancers Carolyn Cooper, Angela Harriell, Jordan Fife Hunt, Denis Hyland, Christina Johnson, Mary Kay Lee and Leigh Pujado. The Key West Citizen said about the company: “Comprised of local and visiting professional dance artists, this company has simply never presented a bad show.  Hooray and hallelujah — honest-to-god professional dance in Key West!”

Tickets are available at 305-294-5015 or at www.waterfrontplayhouse.org. Check out the Friday night discounted tickets either online or by calling the box office.
