KEY WEST, FL – The Waterfront Playhouse is proud to present “Fooling Buddha”, a solo theatrical work written by David Kovac and developed in collaboration with Artistic Director Patrick New. Set to be staged from November 13–15, 2025, this enchanting coming-of-age piece blends storytelling, sleight-of-hand magic, and spiritual insight in an unforgettable evening of performance.
In “Fooling Buddha”, audiences will join a young trickster navigating life as the first American Buddhist kid on the block in working-class 1970s Milwaukee. With multiple characters portrayed by Kovac — from a neighborhood bully to a philosophical magician and the oddball locals in between — the piece invites us into a world of myth, misdirection, and metamorphosis.

About the Creative Team:
David Kovac is a classically trained actor, voice talent and juggler with two decades of experience in live performance. His solo show “Fooling Buddha” has been hailed as “a brilliantly constructed one-man play” full of charm, magic and heart. Patrick New, as Artistic Director of the Waterfront Playhouse, joins Kovac in the development of this piece, originally produced at the First Folio Theatre in Chicago.
Quote from Artistic Director Patrick New:
“Fooling Buddha is a rare gem — part memoir, part magic act, part meditation on identity and mischief. We’re thrilled to present this to our Key West community and invite theatre-goers to experience something unexpected and moving.”
When the sun sets, the curtain rises at the Waterfront Playhouse.

The Award winning Waterfront Playhouse on Mallory Square, is please to announce their On The Edge series. "With the theatre located On The Edge of the water as well as most productions chosen and designed to be performed On The Edge of the stage, it seemed like a winning title", said Managing Artistic Director Tom Thayer. Although a few productions, such as the upcoming musical The Rocky Horror Show will have more production value, the majority of productions, such as Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, The Informer, Bash, and Trunk Material 2 are created and designed to be performed simply.
